2009 SECC Clay Target Fun Shoot

The 12th Annual 2009 SECC Clay Target Fun Shoot was held on November 9th at the Ben Avery Clay Target Center.  This year’s event, co-hosted by ADOT, Game & Fish and the Department of Agriculture, was a spectacular success and broke previous records for participation and funds raised.  The net proceeds from this event were donated to Employees Helping Employees through Valley of the Sun United Way - $7,973, which is up almost 7 percent from last year!  We would like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who participated, either by shooting in the competition or by purchasing raffle tickets.  Your participation and generosity will make a difference in many lives during these challenging economic times!

The winners of the Lewis Class Divisions were:

·       A Class – Dan Twitchell, Ty Gray, Mark Platt, Kaitlin Borie, Chip Friedman – AZGFD

·       B Class – LouAnn DeHart, Tom McMahon, Sherry Crouch, Tim DeHart, Jeremy DeHart – AZGFD

·       C Class – Robert Ringwald, Mark Hamilton, Bill Hahn, Dave Benton, Bob Joy – AECOM, ADOT & McDOT

·       Team with the most opportunity to improve – Dave Young, Cheryl Koch-Martinez, Ricardo Martinez, Michelle Peavy, Scott Peavy – Health Services

The Department of Health Services, which had not previously participated in the Clay Target Fun Shoot, took the Governor’s encouragement to participate in this SECC event to heart and had five teams participate this year.  Way to go ADHS!

Winners of this year’s premium raffles were:

·        Larry Voyles, G&F, won the 14-kt gold bear with opal inlay pendant and chain donated by Armin Edwards, Fine Jewelry Repair, Scottsdale, AZ.

·        Dave Young, Department of Health Services, won the custom lady’s 14-kt gold ring with 8 small diamonds and inlayed mother of pearl, malachite, lapis, coral and black onyx donated by Armin Edwards, Fine Jewelry Repair, Scottsdale, AZ.

·        Joe Merritt, son of an ADOT employee, won the Mossberg Model 835 12-gauge pump shotgun donated by Bear Mountain Sports, Mesa, AZ.

In addition, dozens of people won items donated by individuals and businesses for the door prize raffle.  Thank you to Canyon State Credit Union for donating $500 in VISA gift cards that were used as general raffle prizes and Lewis Class team prizes.  We also thank Warren Haeussler owner of Schlotzsky’s 1140 N. Higley Road, Mesa and 820 W Warner Rd., Chandler for catering lunch at a discount and for donating the chips.

This year’s event coordinators were Mike Hawthorne – Chair (ADOT), Juanita Cason (ADOT), Brett Cameron (Agriculture), Stacie  Archuleta (Agriculture), Leonard Ordway (Game & Fish) and Ashley Lynch (Game & Fish).  We would like to thank this year’s event volunteers: Sarah Wuertz, Vicki Joralmon, Ginny Brown and Libby Nelson from ADOT, Deborah Atkinson from Agriculture  and Anne Prince from Agri-Business Council of Arizona, Joe Militello and Kelly Snyder from the AZ State Library, Archives and Public Records.  We extend a special thank you to George Andrejko from Game & Fish and Stewart Jacobson from Agriculture for taking photos.  Without the participation of our volunteers, the event would not be the success that it is! A SPECIAL THANKS also goes to Sonya Herrera from ADOT for stepping up to the plate and singing the National Anthem at this event with only a 5-minute warning.  Sonya has a beautiful voice and helped kick the event off on the “right note”.
